OCCT 5000. Theories and Foundation in Occupational Therapy (3 Credits)


This course introduces students to the role, scope of practice, terminology and key concepts of occupational therapy and the relationship between participating in occupations and health. Students will begin to develop therapeutic skills needed to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with clients and other healthcare professionals. Students will also begin to cultivate their professional reasoning skills and understand the processes occupational therapists use with people and communities to enable them to meaningfully participate in the activities they want and need to perform. Students will explore theories and frameworks that guide evaluation and intervention in occupational therapy. Students will be exposed to guiding concepts such as therapeutic use of self and activity analysis. During the lab portions, students will practice applying the fundamentals of professional communication and behavior, therapeutic use of self, clinical reasoning, activity analysis, and documentation.
