HST 3040. Jacksonian America (3 credits) This course explores life in the United States between 1815 and 1848, tracing the origins of economic, political, and social trends that shaped the country well into the twentieth century. Main areas of inquiry include early industrialization, the growth of a nationwide transportation network, the emergence of a popular political culture and flourishing two-party system, the origins of a distinct middle-class identity and lifestyle, religious and social reform, the expansion of slavery, and the causes and consequences of “Manifest Destiny.”
