RDG 4000. Best Practices in Reading (3 credits) This course continues the development of the theoretical and practical aspects of pedagogy as it applies to effective and scientific research based methods of teaching reading. This course will continue the development of the understanding of the 5 elements of reading (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension) and how the aspects of the elements are used in correcting reading problems. This course allows pre–‐service teachers to understand the roles of diversity, individual needs and abilities in reading instruction; and how to organize their classrooms and select materials to teach reading. Teaching strategies, including technology, for comprehending written material will be studied and practiced. The reading/writing (composition) connecting will also be addressed. Field Experience Required. PREREQ: Admission to Teacher Education and RDG 2000 .
