SWK 3820. African-American Populations (3 credits) This course is designed to provide the student with a theoretical perspective on the African American family. The course offers an opportunity for students to explore, analyze, and experience various aspects of African American culture via the study of history, oppression, social programs, and acculturation. This course will equip students with skills, sensitivities, and knowledge necessary to help them function more intelligently within a pluralistic society and can serve as a guide for better race relations. The student will learn how to analyze the impact of society on family structure and functioning, and the reciprocal impact of families on society. PREREQ: SWK 2000 is recommended.
