CSC 4020. Network Security (3 credits)

Description

This course introduces the theory and application of network security and related topics. Students will develop the skills necessary to address the security needs of enterprise and personal networking environments. The course covers network attacks and vulnerabilities as well as current defenses. General threat classifications are discussed as they relate to the CIA triad: eavesdropping (confidentiality), man-in-the-middle (integrity), and denial-of-service (availability). Real-world attack incidents and implementations are used to tie concept to reality. Defensive technologies and techniques, including authentication, access control, cryptography, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, routing and DNS security, communication privacy and anonymity, wireless security, cloud security, segmentation, log/traffic monitoring, reputation-based security, and secure protocol (SSH, TLS, DNSSEC) usage are discussed and demonstrated. Course projects will focus on the application of security tools to real world problems. Hands-on labs and exercises are used to reinforce lectures and provide practical implementation experience
