HST 4560. Maps and Power (3 credits) An in-depth exploration of the role of maps in early modern exploration, expanding imperial aims, and developing ontologies about the world. We will explore the history and development of maps and mapmaking, the role of maps in the geo-political landscape, and critical cartographic understandings of maps as agents of power. We will also briefly examine current practices of amassing and utilizing Big Data through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and build our own historical mapping projects. PREREQ/COREQ: HST 3000 or GGY 2500 or GGY 2700
