ART 3250. Women and Art (3 credits)

This course will explore artists from the late medieval period to the Contemporary period, in Europe and the United States, through the study of historical texts and engagement in an extended, historically based examination of how issues of gender, including the role of women in artistic production, have shaped our cultural environment. While the contributions of many women artists have often been neglected, the readings will not only uncover the art of less known women artists but also re-examine their art and the ways in which it has been perceived. Students will gain a clearer understanding of the history of art through examination of women’s positions in history. This course will also examine the connections between art, exhibitions, and art history.  Instructor’s permission. PREREQ: ART 2090
